Nostalgic Nod to Yesteryear...Parly sunny...warm

And the Answer is...................
Are you ready for a little history? These are the clock works that
belong to a "Williams, Orton & Preston" 30 hr. Type I clock w/alarm.
It is a weight driven clock. They probably go back to circa 1820, the
clock company located in Farmington, Connecticut at that time. In the Revolutionary War era, wooden gears (wheels) were made in this country by American clock makers. Brass was too hard or too expensive to import from England. Seth Thomas Co. was the last major clock co. to make wooden gears. Eventually the bushings were made of Brass, but on this example, they are made of Bone. So those who guessed clock works, hooray for you!

We've enjoyed all the conversations these Nostalgic guessing games have sparked,, but with spring and the busy season here on the farm coming, we're going to take a break from these for awhile, we hope to revisit these posts later this year!! Thank you to each and every one of you who participated!!!!

Farm Adventures...cloudy...much cooler

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH  Spring, the season when we just can't help
ourselves  to believe once again, that this time we'll have a better outcome.

I'm letting this rather ugly hen sit.
Even though last years settings turned out this way.................
One hen sat on 10 eggs and hatched 2, both roosters.
My daughter's hen hatched 5 out of her 6 eggs, and got 4 roosters and 1 hen.
Then another of my hens sat and one by one ALL the eggs disappeared,
finally one morning the hen was dead too. A large black snake had smothered
her. Today's hen is in my only snake proof cage, which is fine for
now. But when they start to grow, it won't be big enough! So I see
construction in my future. But I'll wait 21 days to get started
. You know what they say about counting your chickens before they hatch!

Babies....Clear and cold

MARMALADE wanted nothing to do with such silliness
We brought Mocha and Java in for a little 'socializing' yesterday. The cats did not think this was the best idea the humans ever had, the kids just didn't know what to think. But even though I did not try to repeat the Cats and Kids photograph shoot from last year HERE I did get plenty of pictures :)
Mamma kitty checked out the situation,
but didn't get too close, just in case
Flopsy observed from a safe distance
But TOPCAT, didn't have any worries....

He wanted to know just what they were doing in HIS house....
And after all he weighs more than both of them put together

Java is showing how goats can be just as curious as cats!

It's tiresome being a baby goat in a house full of cats!

Homemade Lemon Curd...cloudy, showers..cooler

A favorite recipe, especially in the early spring, when it is 'Everything Egg' season**{Everything season: The time of year (whenever it may be) when you realize EVERYTHING you make needs to have eggs, or milk, or zucchini, or tomatoes, or green beans in it.Because you just have  (insert current item here) coming out your ears?
This Lemon Curd is perfect to top cakes, toast, make lemon bars, eat it straight from the jar :) it's good stuff!((and it freezes well too))

Homemade Lemon Curd
3 cups sugar
3/4 cup cornstarch
2 1/4 cups water
12 egg yolks
2 T. butter
1 1/2 cups lemon juice
1 tsp. lemon extract

Separate eggs (save whites for angle food cake). Beat yolks with a wire whisk. In sauce pan mix together sugar and cornstarch, add water, stir well, cook over medium heat till small bubbles start to form, pour some of hot mixture into bowl of egg yolks, stirring the whole time, add egg yolk mixture back  to saucepan and stir with the whisk, till all incorporated. Cook over medium heat till it begins to boil, then turn to low and cook five minutes stirring constantly (will get very thick) add lemon juice and butter, whisk till incorporated, remove from heat and stir in lemon extract.
Allow to cool, then put in freezer containers and freeze. I usually freeze in two cup containers.
Allow to thaw overnight in the fridge to use.
