Snippets & Snatches...Cloudy... 20's

Auntie's Hat
I found this hat in a thrift store. I bought it because it reminded me of my Great Aunt Madelene, someone I still miss.
She and her mother raised my Mom and two sisters through adolescence, after their mom died.
A straight statured, and straight laced person, whose dignity
could make a better person of you.

I wish I had had a lot more moments with her, but most of my childhood was spent across the nation, far from her.
When we were reunited, I was the adolescent and she was now
my Aunt, Grandmother figure.

Two special memories - When I told her I was getting married, I know she was surprised.
The only thing she could think to say was "Think of all the meals you'll have to cook".
That coming from someone whose food was always special, and had to cook for a persnickety husband.

The other memory is of her wearing this style hat while standing in my Mom's rental apartment and patching the walls.
The six day war was going on in Israel and I
remember her praise of Golda Meir.

They were peers, Golda only one year younger.
My new hat is so warm, but I've decided to keep it for
"display only" because when I tried it on I looked all NOSE!!

But wait, I remember, that's what she use to complain about, the size of her nose.
Well, one of Golda's quotes sort of fits here.

"Fashion is an imposition, a reign on freedom."

Snippets & Snatches...Rainy...50's

Fall sure turns our thoughts to food, doesn't it?
Perhaps there's an instinct to take in more calories to build up for the winter.
I sure do see that in my goats, who are stuffing themselves lately.
I'm happy to see all the comments about cooking without a recipe. (Follow us on FB for random questions like this! )
That's the way I am for sure! When you can only get to town once a week and sometimes even  longer between trips, you sure learn to be creative on the good days, and improvise all other times.
Reading everyone's comments brought to mind an
incident from long ago. ............

We were invited to an anniversary gathering and I was asked to bring the Macaroni Salad.
A family member spoke
right up and said "I hope you'll use a recipe." Humph!!!!! that same
family member often opens the refrigerator door and says "there's
nothing to eat in here." And yet meals are served every day!!!!!
Anyway because I'm in the house more I've been looking through old
cookbooks lately and found this fact.

The first known printed cookbook
was De Honesta Voluptate by Bartholomaeus de Platina, printed in
Venice in 1475.

Perhaps he didn't like his wife always "winging it"
either!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyway one of the great pleasures of life
is that you never stop learning. And that certainly is true in using
the great varieties of food in the creation!

Epicurus wrote "The fountain & root of every good is the pleasure of the stomach".
So let's serve whatever it is with love and cheerfulness as yesterday's
QUOTE said.

Reflections from JonquilJunction...Foggy,,,50's

It's hard for us to believe that almost 2 years have passed since we
started posting.  We sure Hope you'll stop by and  enter our contest for the giveaway of
our cookbook, "Everything Season", which marks our 2nd anniversary Here !
And coincidentally we will reach 5000 followers on our Facebook page about the
same time!  It would be great if you you'd share our page with your friends
to help us get there before November 17 !
We're still cleaning out years of accumulation and coming
across more "Snippets & Snatches" of the past. I went back to the
November 2013 archives on the blog and looked at all the entries about
our town. Some stores have closed, we're sure sorry about that, and
some have opened. This picture is of one still in business, and she
sure has been a loyal supporter of Jonquil Junction.
And in the whole
U.S. there are only a handful of genuine Brick Oven Bakeries,
and we
feel privileged to have one of those.

Anyway thought you might like to
look at the archives, which also featured many local craftspeople.

We hope to start a new feature soon reminiscing about "Café days".
Years ago, small town America revolved around the local café, not only for
good eating, but also for local news and gossip.
And A. Wyse the ol'goat is getting her "Ruminations" about raising humans organized
into book form. So "come go with us" for the next leg of this Journey
to Jonquil Junction.

Aprons.......Sunny 80's

Aprons
 Back in the day
part of every day attire
Made with flour sacks, muslin or calico
they did more than cover your dress
to this  Grandma could attest

Aprons
 From daylight till dark
for dusting and gathering
cooking ,cleaning and more
they helped in some small way
with every single chore

Aprons
Today we remember them with nostalgia,
-----so sad they've been retired
We write of them in poems & blogs & magazines
because they bring back memories
of a simpler time

Aprons
They still have a practical use,
Gather vegetables, eggs or a misplaced item.....
to return to it's proper place, later on.
or simply hang out the wash, while remembering a slower pace
In that long ago place...................

August is.......... Sunny and Hot

August in the Country

AUGUST IS

Last of the hot summer days

              Foggy morning mists

              Quickly blown away

              By violent thunder storms

AUGUST IS

              Grouchy snakes

              And humans too

              Plodding through the heat

              Everyone anticipating

              Cooler days ahead

AUGUST IS

              Crops receding

              Flowers pleading

For just some drops of rain

Morning Glories give blooms a try

Soon the Orb Weavers will stop by

AUGUST IS

              Bending, stooping and scooping

              Hoping the harvest will meet

              The effort put in

              Throughout the heat

              To make it all worthwhile

AUGUST IS

              Eyeing the wood pile

              Too hot to cut wood

              But maybe you should

              Now the dreaded El Nino's

              forecast to blow

AUGUST IS

              Children dreading

              To school be heading

              Singing the familiar song

              How can summer be gone?
