Well, Flossie's babies are here,  they were born during the day & before the storms! The predicament of posing cats and kids----A tutorial......

When we asked "Which would you rather see a picture of  - cats or baby goats?"  Someone said  "cats and baby goats", and some others seconded the idea!  
Well, I'll bet that someone had never tried to take one of those pictures!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So here is the step by step process we went through, a tutorial of sorts if you ever want to try this yourself !

 

Step #1  Get a basket and line it with attractive cloth.
 

Step #2  Decide basket would look nice in front of woodstove.
 

Step #3  Try Lonesome in basket before removing baby goat from her mother.


Step #4  Realize 2 problems -
 Lonesome will not cooperate (notice his ears & tail)
and he FILLS the basket-no room for kid

 

                                                         Step #5 

            Hurry, no, RUN through yard trying to keep baby goat from bleating,

                                             and worrying mother goat.

Step #6 
Try Butterscotch ( she usually cooperates) and recruit help with photo.

Realize 2 more problems -
Butterscotch doesn't like this idea either, & "help" puts finger in picture.

Step #7  Baby goat doesn't like the idea either
and thinks backwards is way out of her dilemma.

Step #8  Baby goat and Butterscotch sort of settle in
(reservations on Butterscotch's part).--note position of her ears!

Step #9  Baby goat does settle in,
  Butterscotch reconsiders and leaves.

                                                             Step # 10 

                    Realize while trying to get picture forgot to include woodstove,

                                           and what happened to pretty cloth? 

 

Step #11 Go get another goat and another pretty cloth, reline basket, reframe picture to include stove again, snap quick!
(Note: No cat (or help) invited!)

So there you have it folks: How to photograph a cat and kid in 11 not-so-easy-easy steps!

October has ended and so has our baby goat season.

It's seems awfully quiet here without them!

All the little evidences of the special provisions for them remind me of our time
together. I really don't have the right separate pens when I have to
wean, so logistics make chores difficult. But I do miss their cute
individual ways and baby voices. I am going to try very hard to
discipline myself and only have one kidding this coming year.

A token of milk for the one who loves yogurt and cheese,  but less work for
the choregiver (ME)!

I want my goat book ( A Goat's Guide to Living with Humans) done!!!!!!!!!!!!! 

 I often tell the grandchildren "the only way to get something done is to do it", but there doesn't seem to be enough hours in the day!

 I have 2 other books outlined in my mind just begging to get written, actually making me nervous since I want this one out of the way first.

Oh well. At least the haymaking if FINALLY over, even though it's still in the '80's. And all the Pears are finally put up.

Here's hoping for a long, mild fall and easy winter, with enough hours in the day to do lots of writing.... here's a sneak peak at the cover of the next book :) Have a great November!

We told Paprika (nicknamed Corker, 'cause, well it just describes him better!) that he'd be leaving for his new home soon, even though he's been weaned for months... his reaction.......... "MOM, Just one more sip please!"

Rhythm & Rhapsody got their first turn to play on the milking stand.

Rhapsody, never higher than ground level until
now, was sure the ceiling held a surprise.



















Then she thought she better check the other side.

 

 

 

 Eventually Rhythm decided to help with the
ceiling while Rhapsody checked behind that board.

Then they decided to work at it together.

Remember Mocha and Java? 

How they have grown, 4 months old this week.

They go out to pasture with Uncle Bandit now while they're being weaned.
Here Mocha is showing his moxie by challenging Bandit who is twice his size.

 But the green grass wins in the end.

This is A. Wyse Ol' Goat, an old nanny that has NO tolerance for other
people's children (kids). But she loves her own and protects them
vigorously. The first year with us, she sent poor Clarabelle (our faithful farm dog) head over heels (my Mom would have used a different expression that involved a teakettle!) down a hill by ramming her broadside when Clarabelle came out to meet her new kids.
Now we have to sneak the kids away to let
Clarabelle meet them, which she always wants to do, which led to this picture which is one of my all time favorite Clarabelle pictures (available as a digital download in our Etsy store too!)

Farm Adventures...Sunny..90's

My Mom used to say on particularly hectic days
"This place is like a 3 ring circus".
I've been thinking of those words lately while doing
goat chores. All kids have to be separated from their Moms while
eating or the grain gets spilled or stepped in, and some don't share
well either, ask poor Rhythm.
Anyway here are some pics which do a small job of showing the problems.
I had to make a place to put Cinnamon and Paprika during chores.
That was okay for a couple of days until my husband frightened Cinnamon coming too close with machinery.
Over she went. Now she gets out every time. Paprika hasn't got it yet.
Being a male he probably wasn't as frightened of the machine!  Now
that they are confined in there, Flossie can and does reach through to
bite them. At the same time Rhapsody's amusement comes from teasing A.
Wyse, who does her best to bite those foreign objects, EARS.
I'll bet a 3 ring circus has better discipline and control than I do!
