HPKW: How did Jonquil Junction begin?
JJ: It began as an idea to connect crafters and customers .
My husband and I have both tried various crafting projects and venues over our 30+ years of living
here , but the remoteness of our location prevented us from having our items seen by many potential customers' . Even though we love the simpler life we live here in the remote Ozark mountains, we needed a way to show our handcrafted items to a wider range of people so we are thankful (sometimes) that the invasion of the internet has allowed us to share our products with folks far and wide .
HPKW: Tell us a little bit about your products:
JJ: Our products are as varied as the weather in these hills:
My husband makes the Hand-hammered copper jewelry
After years of experience with precise woodworking and working with the springs, gears, and metals in his clock-making business, When a customer asked him to make a copper chain for a pocket watch, he used his knowledge of "work hardening" metal to design and craft a chain for the watch. That experience soon led to a line of copper jewelry, with a focus on earrings. He designs each piece in his head first then makes an individual ‘jig’ to bend and hammer the piece into the shape he desires. This time consuming process results in a unique and beautiful piece that you will never see in a mass-produced jewelry store.
All parts of his earrings, except the ear-wire, are handmade and hammered, from the hammered body of the earring right down to each individual , intricate and tiny piece .
Our daughter helps us with the internet side of the business as well as making all the hand-sewn items we offer- from the Handmade biscuit and rag baby quilts, denim rag purses, aprons, notebook covers, embroidered tea towels and more, she’s always trying something new.
I write for the blog , and capture photos featuring our menagerie of four footed and feathered friends as well as our beautiful country landscape, there will soon be a combination of these writing and photos available in book format as well as downloadable prints and other items as well.

Snippets and Snatches.....

        

 

Back to the subject of Jonquils, those of you Facebook followers may recognize "An Old Woman in the Woods". She messaged me recently as to why she's planting more Jonquils and I quote  " I am buying more Jonquils ------- because I am determined to get them to grow --------so that maybe in the future someone will wonder how they got here but enjoy them no matter what."  Such a nice legacy. When I read this I was reminded of a very poignant story I read years ago. A husband was dying slowly and suspected he wouldn't make it until spring. He secretly enlisted friends to come and take his wife out for the day, on the guise of spelling her from her caregiver tasks. While gone each time, he planted and planted lots of Jonquils everywhere in their yard, hiding his handiwork with leaves. He did die that winter. Well imagine his wife's surprise to see those "harbingers of spring" coming up all over her yard as winters' gloom subsided. Only then did her friends come forward to tell her about her husband's secret. Yet another thoughtful way to leave a legacy! Something to smile about .

Here's a thought from our archives.
"Home is where the Heart is", my mother always said.
I wonder  sometimes what home held heartfelt memories for her.
Her mother died when she was 12, and her father left soon after.
So her new home was with relatives, not her parents.
I do remember her talking about the large brick home with the wrought iron fence that joined the sidewalk that she lived in when she was four. I wish I knew where that home was.
But wherever the location, part of what joins our heart to a particular home are fond & soothing memories of time spent with family and friends. I wonder if young folks today are building those memories when they seem to isolate themselves with technology.
 Please everybody, unplug, cook, share meals, play a game, share views, share memories, share crafting, there's no better time than winter!

We have so many new followers from FB, Etsy and google plus that we wanted to share a bit about ourselves and our story for those that may not have seen it in the past.............thanks for joining us,, we hope you'll visit often!

How did Jonquil Junction begin?

 

It began as an idea to connect crafters and customers .

My husband makes the Hand-hammered copper jewelry

Henny-penny

Meet our trusty Henny-Penny.

The broodiest banty on the farm!
She hatched 17 full sized eggs one year, traveled to both my daughters farm and a friends farm to successfully hatch and raise chicks for them, sat on three nests in one year, and easily adopted these three duck eggs, sat the extra days required to hatch duck eggs, and patiently waited for the third egg to hatch,even after these first two were out looking around at the world. She stayed with them and continued to 'mother' them even after they had grown to 'tower' above her small stature.

Once a mother, always a mother! 

November hay........cloudy...58*

Is it really November??? We're cutting the last of the second cutting hay off the field, imagine! at this late date.
Of course the quality isn't the best but it will do while it's mild and then be used for bedding.
Such a rainy year the grass couldn't help but grow, and then grow some more. This is a chore we'll be glad to see the last of! Now we'll see how long it lasts, as we've never put it up loose before.
We're trying several new recipes using Sweet Potatoes, as the harvest was great. Check tomorrow's blog post for a new one. {And there are already several in the New Cookbook(see details below) ! }

Charlie's House

 

I never knew Charlie                             

He was gone before I came

But I often heard about him

That is how I know his name

 

He came here to build

A house all by himself

He told all the neighbors

"Don't offer any help"

 

And so his funny, lopsided house

Sits beside a bluff

Deep in the woods, with trees growing through

As well as all the wood

That he bought in town

 

He couldn't complete his dream

So when he was spent,

Back to Texas he went

 

Curiosity led me down his road

To snoop and poke around

Well, Fall is here with cooler temperatures... so let's take a ride. Hop on this train with an Old Woman and she will take you across the country this week visiting friends and neighbors. Now... some days the train might derail and sit there.... oh , lets say MargaritaVille... 🍷 🍸 But it will take off again as soon as able.

Goodbye October.. Hello November....cloudy...50's

What a difference 2 weeks can make.
 A lot of our trees are bare or almost there.
Their leaves are rearranging into leaf litter and
someday compost.
Soon the sap will be down and a spell of dormancy will start.
When all leaves are off and the grasses die our winter of
gray and brown will begin.
Not much snow in these hills and when we do
get some it USUALLY doesn't last too long, so that makes for a
monotone winter.
Good time to get cooking!

Exciting news ! The cookbooks have arrived!!! Thanks to ups tracking I knew they were coming and cleared off the kitchen table to photograph them, as so often happens I got busy doing something else for a few minutes and when I returned to the table with the camera this is what greeted me!
