"Vintage" Chocolate Pudding....Sunny....50's

One of our family favorites...................
Here's one of my Mom's recipes, at least 50 years old. You can see how much it's been used.
Isn't her handwriting lovely? She and her sisters had such pretty flowing script, back in the day when handwriting was still emphasized in school!

6 T. cornstarch
1/2 cup cocoa
few grains of salt
1 cup sugar
1 quart milk
1 tsp. vanilla

Here's the procedure ------------
Mix sugar ( I reduce to 2/3 cup) cornstarch and cocoa in a heavy
bottom pan.  Add milk while stirring over medium heat.

Continue to stir until thickened and just starts to bubble.
If you have to answer the phone,  the door, or check Facebook remove from heat, it will catch on bottom and burn!
Add vanilla, pour into bowl, cover with plastic and let cool or chill in refrigerator.
Says feeds 6, but not at my house!

Snippets & Snatches.....cloudy...40*

It's been COLD, so thought I'd take off my outside shoes and put these slippers on and look through this catalog I've never seen before. (How did they find me?)
Well while I was busy Marmalade claimed them for
herself. Isn't that a contented look?

Weather....Cold...icy...more to come...

Beautiful to behold
But I must be getting old
Because a sense of dread has taken hold

Looking at the ice
Knowing  I can't get off the porch
Even the picture doesn't seem nice

Waiting for the sun
Know chores must be done
Guilty feelings about the outside community

I hate to admit it
But there's no denying that
A Fair Weather farmer, is what I've become

She's not supposed to go in the living
room,  she has a nice bed in another part of the house, but when it's 10* out who can resist backing up to the woodstove?

Lemon Breakfast Bread...colder...windy

Bread:
1 cup sugar
1/3 cup butter, melted
1 tsp. lemon extract
1/4 cup Lemon juice
2 eggs
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp. Baking Powder
1/2 cup milk

Glaze:
1/2 cup powdered sugar
2-3 Tablespoons lemon juice

Combine sugar and butter, beat in eggs one at a time till well blended, add juice and extract.
Mix flour and baking power together and add alternately with the milk, stirring just until incorporated. Pour into well greased and floured pan(s) and bake at 350* for 30-35 minutes for 2 pans 50-60 minutes for one large loaf. Test with knife, done when knife inserted in center comes out clean. Cool five minutes, remove from pan and place in center of piece of aluminum foil large enough to wrap loaf in. Drizzle with glaze while still warm, wrap foil around loaf and refrigerate overnight.
You can make this in one large loaf pan, or divide into two if you prefer it to cook quicker and have smaller servings. (or share a loaf with a friend!)
Delicious with  cup of coffee!

Snippets & Snatches.....Sunny....still..50*

I've heard  Procrastination is the Thief of Time,  well 40 years
have gone by since I started this shirt for a family member!!!!!!!

That's before my Grandchildren were born---Before my Daughter was born--Before we moved across country---As you can see from the first picture, I got as far as cutting it out and starting to pin it together before it got set aside and then packed away.............At least the family member never knew it had been started so will still be surprised to receive it.I bought the cloth and pattern at the Exeter Handkerchief Factory in Exeter, N.H. They have been in business since the 1930's and still are.
My Mom went there regularly for her sewing fabrics.
Now my daughter who enjoys sewing,  as I never did, is finishing it for me.
My Mom WAS the seamstress, as well as her two sisters. One sister worked for a French Dressmaker, as a teenager, and made fine beaded gowns.
Anyway when the acorn fell from my mother's tree, it bounced quite a ways, and skipped to the next generation, to  my daughter, who makes all the lovely things you see posted. And even though I did enjoy knitting in my younger days my daughter never did pick it up in spite of several tries through the years, but my Granddaughter decided last year she was going to teach herself to knit, and has taken to it like the proverbial duck to water, so another bounce of the acorn from generation to generation.........at least the old timey ways are being kept alive in our family, by one or the other :)

1 large onion, chopped

1 cup sweet peppers, I like a mix of bell's and bananas, chopped

2 large jalepenos, chopped fine

4 cloves garlic, crushed

2 lbs ground lean meat

1 T. garlic powder

1 T. chili powder

2 tsp. Smoked paprika

1 tsp crushed chili flakes (optional)

1 rounded tsp. Salt

1 T. jalepeno jelly (optional)

1 tsp liquid smoke

1 T. worstershire sauce

1 (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes with green chili's (undrained)

1 (15.5 oz) kidney beans (drained) OR chili beans (undrained)

1 T. tomato paste

1 cup apple juice

In large pan saute onion and peppers in oil about five minutes, add ground meat, cook until browned, drain any grease if needed, add crushed garlic and all seasonings cook, stiring, 1-2 minutes till garlic is fragrant. Add Jalepeno jelly if using, liquid smoke, worstershire sauce, tomatoes, beans and tomato paste. Add apple juice and bring to a simmer. Pour into a 4 quart crock-pot and cook on low for 4-6 hours.
Serve with a warm pan of cornbread, crackers, or your favorite topping.
